James Despard-Clarke BSc Sports & Remedial Massage and Exercise/Rehabilitation Therapist

Sports & Remedial Massage and Exercise/Rehabilitation Therapist

I specialise in injury advice and treatment as well as exercise-based rehabilitation and massage.

After graduating in 2008 from Bournemouth with a BSc in Exercise Science and Health Rehabilitation, I worked within the NHS as a fitness instructor at Torbay Hospital for 6 months delivering exercise-based rehabilitation classes for people with cardiac and respiratory conditions including post intensive care classes and supporting physiotherapists in their care with inpatients prescribing chair and bed based exercises.

For the past 5 years I have been working as an Exercise Therapist for the Fire Fighters Charity at their residential rehabilitation centre near Exeter, working with clients suffering from musculo-skeletal/sport injuries, aiding in long term condition management and post orthopaedic surgery rehabilitation. My experience has allowed me to prescribe and deliver exercise to a wide variety of clients ranging from those who are hospital bound to athletes competing at a national level.

Working at the Charity and working alongside physiotherapists and sports massage practitioners showed me the huge benefit of soft tissue work, mobilisations and fascial work in partnership with exercise, so in 2009 I trained and qualified as a Sports Massage practitioner. This allowed me to bring a more rounded approach to my treatments and influence change from hands on treatment that I could not achieve with exercise alone.

My love for exercise naturally flows over into my personal life, I currently captain an 11-a-side football side in the south Devon league and enjoy playing 6 a side football on week day evenings. I also attend the gym regularly (x5-6 per week) I have been a keen cross-fitter for 2 and a half years competing at three local team events. CrossFit appeals to me because of its focus on mobility and improving movement patterns that have been almost forgotten amongst people outside of the professional sport world, allowing people to move more efficiently with increased bodily awareness. It has also opened my eyes to other disciplines including gymnastics and Olympic weight lifting.
